dual embodiment of racial and gender injustices. This is the author's forum to address
significant social and political issues that continually render African-American women
invisible and devalue their experiences collectively, as well as individually. She
manages
to do this in a effective and unbiased fashion. hooks' delivers an irrefutable arguement
that will encourage readers to open their hearts and minds to confront their
own internalized racism, sexism, and classism - MICHELLE L. GRANDEPaperback (November

Believing that the translation of the Bible
they use consists of the inerrant word of God, some Christians cite a
handful of passages to justify their condemnation of homosexuality. But
historical biblical scholarship holds that these believers' conception of
inerrancy is naively based, for English versions of the originally Hebrew
and Greek scriptures are rife with problematic translations. Some scholars
further maintain that the supposedly antihomosexual passages are not
blanket condemnations of homosexual persons and acts. Indeed, in some
cases, these verses aren't about homosexuality at all; they meant quite
different things to those for whom they were first written, peoples whose
social conceptions of sexuality were vastly different from ours. Helminiak
provides cogent, accessible precis of these revisionist findings on the
Bible's six major passages and few minor references that seem to denounce
homosexuality. The Bible does not condemn gay sex as we understand it
today, he concludes; those who seek to know outright if gay or lesbian sex
is good or evil . . . will have to look elsewhere for an answer. An
extremely valuable contribution to popular gay and biblical studies. Ray

Winner of the 1995 Oscar in the Live Action Short Subject
Category, TREVOR tells the poignant story of a teenager who struggles to come to terms
with his sexual identity. The stylized first-person narrative film was written by James
Lecesne, based on his one-man stage show, produced by Randy Stone and Peggy Rajski, and
directed by Rajski. "TREVOR is about anybody who feels they're not part of the
majority or a group that is powerful,'' says Ellen DeGeneres. ``I hope kids out there
see
that they're not alone in their feelings, if they're gay or whatever it is -- that
there's
somebody else out there who has been through exactly what they're going through. There
is
hope and there is help. The message is: Don't give up.'' |
